FLORHAM PARK, NJ-- January 22, 2014 - Aviation Safety Resources (ASR), a pioneer in life-saving safety systems for small aircraft, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Springton Technologies of Newtown Square, Pa. to develop a demonstration model of its groundbreaking Smart Recovery System (SRS) for General Aviation Aircraft.
The SRS prototype will be unveiled at the 57th Annual Aircraft Electronics Association's International Convention & Trade Show in Nashville, Tenn., March 12-15, 2014. The event is the platform of choice for introducing new avionics products.
The SRS1 is the first of three ASR safety systems, which will bring all sensors/monitoring systems in general aviation aircraft into one control panel to continuously diagnose flight status, alert the pilot to problems with any safety device or system present on the aircraft, and suggest corrective action.
ASR Founder and President Dario P. Manfredi said the SRS family of safety systems will be key to preventing general aviation accidents, which remain on the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) "most wanted" list of safety improvements. The SRS1 demonstration unit will address the five most common causes of accidents spotlighted in NTSB safety videos released last summer.
The NTSB reports that general aviation continues to have the highest accident rate in civil aviation -- six times higher than small commuter operators and 40 times higher than transport category operations. Personal flying accident rates have increased 20 percent, while the fatal accident rate has increased 25 percent over the last 10 years.
"The key to risk management is to identify the potential hazard early," Manfredi said. "Identifying a hazard in its early stages allows a pilot to assess and manage the risk or potential risk earlier in the sequence. Applying sensor systems, like those currently available in commercial and military aircraft, the SRS will visually and audibly alert a pilot when approaching a hazard, such as stall speed, yellow and red airspeed arcs, and unsafe bank angles.
"This early warning system will be enhanced in the next phase of SRS development, the SRS2, which will not only evaluate and alert a pilot to an emergency situation, but will identify the devices and systems available on the aircraft, and then automatically deploy the appropriate device and/or system in the safest manner unless overridden by the pilot," Manfredi said.
Manfredi said the SRS is designed to deploy whatever safety systems are available on the aircraft to rectify an in-flight emergency including fire extinguisher systems, autopilot and flight control systems, airbags and ballistic and parachute recovery systems like the BRS single-chute and, ultimately, ASR's TriChute Safe Landing System.
"Avionics companies have made great strides in creating new features, however, none begin with a comprehensive diagnostic and instant awareness or offer the integrated solutions promised by our system," said Manfredi.
The staff at Springton Technologies has been developing safety-critical software, and leading the development and certification of avionics projects for more than 25 years. They have extensive experience with FAA certification under DO-178B and have aided numerous clients in developing DO-178B compliant software processes. Previous projects have included closed loop flight control systems and control systems for autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles as well as cockpit displays, pilot interfaces and other cockpit avionics systems. Springton software is installed on aircraft manufactured by Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Lear, Cessna, Gulfstream, King Air, Beechcraft and others.

ASR's intellectual property portfolio includes Patent No. 8200379 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded to the SRS in 2012 and two patents for the TriChute Safe Landing System (U.S. Patent Numbers 5009374 and 7934682) proven and tested in 1967 by Manfredi's father, Dario J. Manfredi, using a specially equipped Stinson Voyager in an FAA-sanctioned flight at Lakehurst (NJ) Naval Air Station. The technology activates a series of ballistic systems that separate the passenger compartment from the fuel containing wings and deploys three parachutes that bring the passengers and wings down in separate, controlled level landings.
